Blackburn Olympic FC
This short lived club (about a decade) famously won the FA Cup in 1883 defeating Old Etonians by 2-1 and in doing so became the first team north of Oxford to win the trophy. With professional designs on winning everything they went in for, they were led by Jack Hunter (ex-Sheffield) and were probably the first team to take training seriously.Walsall were due to play them on an Eastertour in 1883 but the game was called off because Olympic were in training for the cup final.
I spent many years withoutsuccess trying to find their elusive and bizzarely named 'Hole I'-Th'-Wall' ground. Then recently I got a lead from a book about the history of the town of Blackburn written by one H.H.Langton in the Victorian era. He stated that a old Roman road ran past .......and went by the Hole I'The Wall public house at Shire Brow. After hours of searching Blackburn on Google Earth,I managed to find 'Shear Brow' I compared this location with maps from 1891, and behold, there was the pub with a 4 acre field behind it. I then knew I had at last found it.
Better still was the fact that although St.Marys College had been built alonside the pub in modern times, the actual football pitch WAS STILL THERE. Even the cobblestone street leading up to and alongside the ground were still there, plus the original stone wall which ran around the pub and the football ground. The college actually use it as a football pitch, with another one at the other end of it.
A disappointment came when I looked up 'Hole I' Th' Wall pub on Wikepedia, and there was a photo of it ! Still, I got there in the end.
